Brief History of Human Resources Management

Leadership and management are not brand-new concepts. Each of them changed as ancient civilizations advanced. It was customary for ancient emperors to rule over communes, villages, and early towns. The king was responsible for protecting the populace and collecting taxes. Without competent management, strong leadership, and the ability to divide duties and responsibilities, they were unable to do these fundamental tasks.

They have to learn the techniques of effective delegating. The moment David Ulrich released his first book on human resources was not the beginning of the history of human resources management. He learned that effective people management was essential even in ancient China. He also learned the significance of human resources management for successful enterprises. The growth of the first ancient societies and the evolution of the first communes are the subjects of HR history.

HR Management History

The British Industrial Revolution marks the beginning of human resources' contemporary history as we currently understand it. The establishment of major industries considerably raised the need for labor. It happened in the 18th century, and that's when new people management techniques started to emerge. It represents a significant turning point in the history of human resources. The globe underwent a significant transformation as a result of the quick development of new industrial techniques and innovations. Many sectors started to place a high focus on speedy and inexpensive production.

Many people were employed by the industries, some of whom put in up to 16 hours every day. Consequently, many business owners realized that employee contentment affects performance and productivity. Those who were satisfied were more productive than the rest of the workforce and could generate more goods than those who were depressed. In order to improve employee comfort and satisfaction, many factories began to implement voluntary initiatives. Also, the government started to step in to implement rules for workplace safety and some basic human rights.

Early Phase:

In 1250 B.C., Moses had a clear understanding of organization. The division of labor concept was invented by the Chinese about 1650 B.C. The Babylonian Code of Hammurabi, which dates back to around 1800 B.C., featured minimum wage rates and incentive wage structures. In his work Arthasastra, the Indian author Kautilya discussed a number of ideas, including job analysis, selection, development, and performance evaluation.

 The Industrial Revolution:

Between 1850 and 1875, the industrial revolution's basis was set. Technology advanced quickly during this time, and machine creation was prevalent. The upshot was a rise in job specialization, and businesses began to combine together, but the workers' living and working conditions were subpar, and their hours of labor were excessive.

Employers were only concerned with achieving production goals, not with meeting the needs of their workforce. Poor working conditions and low pay rates led to the establishment of an antagonistic relationship between employers and employees. This paved the way for the slow emergence of systematic attention to worker wellbeing and created the groundwork for HRM.

  4. HRM, being a part of management discipline, has followed the pattern of development of management
because of the interrelationship of the problems of both the fields.
Human Resource Management (HRM) is relatively a very recent term considered for managing human
resources in an organisation. HRM is still evolving to become an amalgam of organisational behaviour,
personnel management, industrial relations and labour legislation.
